The weather today was very nice here in Oak Hill. It started out as a usual summer morning with very light winds here on the Mosquito Lagoon flats. The mid section of the Mosquito Lagoon was my destination. Arriving first there makes all the difference as too several guides will start late and then just come right in on top of you. Lack of professionalism and basically just lazy if you ask me.
I started out on the furthest point towards the channel about 300 feet away from the pole troll zone and slowly, I mean slowly worked my way into the area. I almost always use my push pole and use the trolling motor to make up very large distances. This is 100 times better than trolling always. Not only is it a better approach, but a better thing to do for the grass. I personally feel that even trolling motors should be forbidden in the pole and troll zones as well. The winds were west so I used this to my benefit. As I approached the area that went from 4 feet to 2 - 1 feet you could see action everywhere!
The mullet were there in full force as an invasion team! Of course on the first cast (using the DOA Baitbuster Shallow Runner top water Mullet Pattern) I had a small pop. This was followed by an explosion that caught me of guard. A few minutes later came a nice 28 inch plus spotted seatrout! A few more cast later came a nice redfish. Then another and another. I worked my way along the backside of the bar to the other end of the zone using the wind at my advantage. I stayed about 300 feet off the bar side (the south bar) working it parallel.
By the time I had gotten to the other side I had caught over a dozen nice fish. Including red drum, black drum, lady fish, and the trout. All on top water except for the black drum which ate a black crab pattern on my 8 weight fly rod I throw at him.
Later in the day I moved towards the northern section, north by the New Smyrna Beach area. Here I slowly worked soft soft DOA plastics and caught a couple more red fish and smaller sea trout before calling it a day. My day today ended by 10a.m. This goes to show you the early bird gets the fish or seatrout or red fish! Of course I also beat the heat.
On a side note talked with some fellow captains and they said the Cocoa Beach fishing reports were going strong. Tarpon and redfish are thick along the Indian River near the Titusville waters. Port Canaveral and Sebastian Inlet fishing reports have been epic. I am being told that the tarpon are strong along the Atlantic beach and the bite is off the wall. I have also been told that there is still cobia and triple tails being landed near the buoys. Snook are all throughout the Palm Bay and Sebastian area as well.
Please remember to handle every fish you catch with the utmost caution and extreme care. This will ensure a higher survival rate upon their release.
Everyone please be safe out there and have a great summer of fishing.
