August 22nd, 2008 - Mosquito Lagoon New Smyrna Beach Fishing Report

This week we have had Tropical Storm Fay move in and dump a ton of water in central Florida. After the storm clears the redfish and seatrout bite should improve over time. Fish the drain pipes and runoffs all over the Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River for tarpon, snook, red fish and trout. Top water plugs for trout and mullet for redfish, typically the DOA fishing lures here. Saltwater fly fishing for both of these central Florida sport fish is always an option as well. However do remember that there could be large amounts of debris in the area so use caution.

The red fish on the Mosquito Lagoon will be very spooky so approach them with stealth and caution. Please also remember that if you are fishing the Tiger Shoals area that this is a pole/troll zone only. Too many people are abusing this and they need to be reported. Unfortunately some are even guides. The rules are in place for reasons and need to be followed. No one is above the law. Call law enforcement if you see a violation in progress and request an officer to respond. This does help and sends a message to those who choose to violate this rule. We as sport fishing anglers do not need violators like this on our waters. No matter who they are, professional, commercial or recreational. To improve fishing and protect grass flats, two Pole and Troll Zones have been established in Mosquito Lagoon.

The zones are delineated with buoys. Within the zones, internal combustion engines must be shut off (except in posted channels) and vessels drafting more than 12 inches at rest must not enter. Vessels may be propelled by a non-motorized power source such as drifting, push poles, paddles, etc. Electric trolling motors may be used through the zones. Boats may operate internal combustion engines only in the posted channels within the Pole and Troll Zones and not off the sides inside the PT zone. This benefits all of us and will be a great pay off in the future for going after reds and trout. Should you have any questions over this please contact the rangers at Canaveral National Seashore or the refuge. Remember you are to have current refuge permit with you at all times when fishing these areas. Also be sure the guide you hire to fish the refuge and/or the Mosquito Lagoon is on the permitted guides list. It is the law.

Contact law enforcement at the Canaveral National Seashore and ask them if they are on it.
