The past several weeks have been producing very nice catches of red fish and seatrout. As the warmer weather keeps moving in the earlier you must start. If you are targeting some trout, you will want to be at your fishing spot with lines in the water at about a half hour before any signs of light. Mullet are working great as well as will pin fish. Free line a little pinfish off the bars and drop offs. If you want to get some redfish then try sight casting a large shrimp or cut mullet to them. However use a soft presentation as to not scare them off.
Fly fishing the Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River for them is at a prime now too. Small crab flies or a shrimp pattern on a 7 or 8 wt. fly rod will make for great fun. A key element her with saltwater fly fishing the Mosquito Lagoon or just sight fishing is to be able to hit an area the size of a small area rug. Two back casts at 60 feet as well. Good target acquisition is a must along with distance do to the shallow waters here. These fish are very spooky. I have been catching most(90%) of my redfish in less then a foot of water and most of them on fly.
With this in mind a trolling motor does no good. If any thing it does more damage. These fish can hear this a very long distance away. If your boat is not able to go into very skinny water then position yourself off the shallows and free line a live mullet. At some point these fish will pick this scent up and move in for the kill. Soft DOA plastics are working great as well. Tarpon are starting to be seen at Ponce Inlet along the beaches as well as in the Cocoa Beach and Port Canaveral area.
As always practice catch and release.
