Happy New Year first of all!!! The new beginning of this year is turning out to be very well. The north and south end of the Mosquito Lagoon has been on fire lately. Along with the Indian River and the Cocoa Beach fishing area as well. With the weather being just perfect for light tackle saltwater fly fishing and just not fishing in the morning but all day long.
This is the time of year you can stay out there all day long and enjoy this beautiful mid Florida winter weather. With water temps in the 60's -; 70's and air temps in the 70's the shallow water fly fishing is getting at its peak. Sight fishing the Mosquito Lagoon is prime right now. Water levels have also been great for this.
Fish shorelines and creeks for numerous redfish, seatrout and black drum. Large gator trout are moving through the area along with large schools of red fish. I have been catching most of my fish on the D.O.A. and top water combination. I have landed several redfish using an 8 weight fly rod as well with a black imitation crab pattern. These baits are great.
You can also use a live or cut mullet and fresh shrimp. Last month there were good numbers of shrimp being caught in the river so this is the ideal bait to use is crabs or shrimp. If you are fly fishing the Mosquito Lagoon try using a fly pattern in a natural shrimp or crab color. Just remember to start of early, work it slowly and cover ground. Be quiet, take your time and be considerate to others while on the water. Most of all be safe and try to practice catch and release when ever you can.
